758 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Broken Mirror
Location: Marine CO's Office

It had taken a while but finally, in Danny Rye's opinion at least, the Marines attached to the USS Calypso had begun to operate at a decent level. It had taken what felt lile a lifetime of drills and exercises, many late nights and long days but by practically every metric that Starfleet offered as a means to judge the performance of it's personnel, they were officially performing at 'above average'.

Despite that though, the powers that be had decided to provide him with a second in command not of his own choosing, a choice that had initially rather irritated the Marine Captain although any annoyance turned quickly to curiosity the further into the service record of a one Captain Cameron Bourne he read.

Eventually there was only one thing left to do and so Rye called for Bourne's presence, for if the Calypso's inexperienced detachment of Marines were to realise the plan that Danny had for them, he was going to need the support of the more experienced heads and Bourne certainly seemed to fall into that catergory.

Working out in the ships gym when he got the call, Cam quickly wiped himself down with his towel and hurried off to his Unit CO’s office. He’d been expecting this call sooner or later, and now Cam was going to see what type of officer this Captain Rye was. From what he’d read, Rye came up through officer candidate school and was your standard Marine Officer, though his service record was clean enough.

Pausing for a moment outside of the MCO’s office, Cam took a breath in before tapping the door chime.

Despite having been expecting the door chime to sound, Danny had quickly fallen deeply into his own thoughts and so when it finally did, it had startled him somewhat.

Sliding the PADD that he had been holding back across the desk, he called for the man outside to enter, standing as he did so.

"Captain Bourne," Rye spoke as the doors parted to reveal his new second in command, "Welcome to the Calypso." he said, offering Cameron a handshake as he spoke.

“Thank you sir, it’s good to be back” Cam replied, taking the offered hand. Taking a quick glance inside the office, a smile came to his face. “I see you’ve redecorated”

"Yeah," Rye chuckled as he returned to his chair and offering the one opposite to Bourne, "I can't say decorating is a strength of mine particularly, but I think it's turned out pretty well."

There was a moments pause before Danny took in a deep breath, "Lets get straight to it. We have a lot of greenness among the Marines assigned to us. We've been training and drilling hard and they're starting to perform but we haven't really been tested yet. I'd really like to develop a reputation for this group strong enough that when we do meet a threat, it'll do most of the hard work for us if that makes any sense."

Danny had little intention of having to write letters to parents. If they would be able to enter any fight with the enemy already wary of facing his Marines, he was confident it would give them the upper hand in any future fight.

Cam nodded, “I’ll make life takers and heart breakers out of them. I’m sure with 1st Lieutenant Melo’s help, we can scuff up these shinies in no time”

"No doubt," Rye smiled, "And if there's anything you need to help settle back in, let me know."

"Thank you Captain, but I'm sure I'll be fine. It wasn't that long ago that I was sitting on the other side of that desk." Cam said, motioning to the desk between them. "Don't worry, I'm not here for your job. I'll follow and carry out any and all orders you give"

“That’s a comfort to know Captain” Rye commented as he stood from his chair and extended a hand again, “well, officially welcome back Captain Bourne, I look forward to seeing what you can do”

Taking the offered hand, Cam have Rye a nod, “thank you sir, it’s good to be home again” he said before quickly snapping to attention, turning around and marching out of Rye’s office and back into his old life. While he didn’t know what was to come, all he knew was he was finally back where he belonged.
